Gorgeous animals…

HAA, originally uploaded by weehen.

I love this window, at the Honolulu Academy of the Arts…my favourite it the brontosaurus in the lower left, but it’s a tough choice! I’m on Spring Break at the moment and still struggling with the shoulds, coulds and woulds…but mostly, I’m just relaxing and hanging out with the kids.

A long way from Taronga Zoo…

Honolulu Zoo Sign, originally uploaded by webnelly.

We spent the day at the zoo today, and for the first time (of several visits) I noticed this sign, showing Taronga Zoo is over 5,000 miles away….makes me feel a long way from home….

Teabag Quote for the Day

March 17th, 2010

Lavender Teabags, originally uploaded by PatchworkPottery.

Make all you can,
Save all you can,
Give all you can.

John Wesley (1703-1791)

At first when I read this quote, sipping my tea, I thought it simply applied to money, but now I think it means much more these days, whatever the original intent of the quote. Making is a very creative pursuit, so that certainly applies to those of us striving to cram more creativity into our days; saving is not just smart but green and more than merely frugal - it is a necessity in these times; giving…well that is just always a good thing, we can always give more to the world, the universe at large, and those we love.

(And these adorable lavender bag teabags were found on Flickr, and seemed to fit all 3 meanings…)

Teabag Quote for the day…

My favourite tea (a spicy herbal tea from Good Earth) has these great little quotes on the paper tab for the teabag, and today’s quote just felt blog-worthy…

Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California

Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California, originally uploaded by George Eastman House.

Dorothea Lange, one of my all-time favourite photographers. This image is part of a wonderful project called Flickr Commons, which includes the Smithsonian, Library of Congress and more, and I am actually doing a project on this for my archives management class (part of a graduate certificate in Museum Studies). I was so excited to see this iconic image, I couldn’t resist blogging it!

Small House Love (an ongoing saga)

March 8th, 2010
I’ve long admired Ross Chapin, an architect based in Seattle who designs homes on a diminuitive yet lovely scale….
Who would not want a place called Plum Cottage, after all?

http://www.rosschapin.com/Plans/Houses/PlumCorner/PlumCorner.html

The other architect I admire lately designs the modern-day versions of gypsy caravans, though as my better half points out, living in one with 2 small children might be less of a fairytale…still, I’m sure they’d be fun for short-term!

First Tablet Drawing

First Tablet Drawing, originally uploaded by weehen.

Yes, I’m just another overly proud parent. My daughter recently turned 5 and is showing an interest in learning to use a computer, so I unleashed her on my tablet for the first time. I only showed her how to change colours, and she only knows the pencil tool so far, but I thought it was a pretty good first effort. Her hand-eye coordination is really good. (And she forgot the arms, which is typical of her drawings lately - I’m trying not to read too much into that!)

Cottage garden dreaming

January 26th, 2010

English cottage garden, originally uploaded by weehen.

Yes, it’s no secret that I love cottages, and hanker after one of my very own some day. Not only do I love tiny wee homes, but I absolutely adore cottage gardens. And not just the poppies, foxgloves and wisteria varieties either. This little garden is so stunning with it’s raised beds of succulent lettuce and vegies, various flowers and vines around. Isn’t it gorgeous? I could potter in a place like that endlessly.

We’re busy planning our little girl’s 5th birthday party…hard to believe she will be 5 already. So here is the invite so far (minus the text)…
